What is an IP address?
All computers that are connected to the public internet are assigned a uniquie number. This number is the Internet Protocol Address, IP address. They consist of four numbers which are separated by periods. They look something like this:
202.111.222.232
Most times you can tell where an IP address comes from because certain blocks of numbers are assigned to regions.
Most people have a dynamic IP address. However, you can pay your internet service provider to assign you a static IP address.
Static IP Address
A static IP address is constant. Every time you log onto your computer you have the same IP address. Static IP addresses are more reliable if you are using Voice over Internet Protocol, are hosting a website, or you are running a server. If you feel you need a static IP address you would have to contact your ISP (internet service provider)to organise it.
Dynamic IP Address
A dynamic IP address is what most people have. Every time they log onto their computer a different IP address is assigned. One advantage of having a dynamic IP address is the security. There is less risk of people hacking into your computer. It is cheaper to run as your ISP doesn't charge as much for a dynamic IP address. It is also easier to set up your network with a dynamic IP address as there is automatic network configuration.
